The island of Salina comprises 3 municipalities: Santa Marina Salina (Santa Marina Salina, Lingua); Leni (Rinella, Leni, Valdicchiesa); Malfa (Malfa, Pollara).
Salina is the second largest island in the archipelago, with 26.8 km².
Its name comes from the small salt lagoon located in the southeast of the island.
In Pollara, the Italian film "Il Postino" (1994) was shot; it was nominated for five Academy Awards (and was the first with which Italy competed in the Best Picture category).
Among all the Aeolian Islands, it is the one with the highest peaks, including the three volcanoes that formed it: Monte Fossa delle Felci (962 m), Monte dei Porri (860 m), and Monte Rivi (850 m).
In Salina, traces of Bronze Age settlements can still be found.
